Niittykumpu – a communal, modern neighbourhood

A sense of community plays a key role in Niittykumpu as the area is only 2.1 square kilometres in size. A large number of families with children live in the area, and a wide range of services is available to local residents. There is also a day care centre and school in the area. The local supermarket offers a wide selection of products, and there are many recreational services to choose from.

The seamless pedestrian and cycling network offers quick routes to Tapiola and Matinkylä, where you can find the Ainoa and Iso Omena shopping centres.

Future Niittykumpu residents get to enjoy a sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle. All necessary services are located within walking distance or a short metro ride away, reducing the need for private cars in the area.

Pedestrian and cycling routes have been planned to be as convenient and safe as possible. There are 400 bicycle parking spaces near the metro station, 200 of which are covered. The Tapiola sports park and the Tapiola and Matinkylä urban centres are easy to reach by bicycle, and there are also frequent bus services running in the area.

Several new buildings have already been constructed in Niittykumpu, and the area will continue to develop in the future. The Niitty shopping centre is connected to the metro station and offers everyday services to residents. Local landmarks include the 12- and 24-storey apartment buildings on top of the shopping centre.

In the future, Niittykumpu will be a modern metro hub and a new residential area for thousands of people. The plans include new services, street and traffic arrangements, pedestrian and cycling solutions, and green spaces.

Services for families include a day care centre, a school, and several playgrounds and sports and recreational facilities. The safety of children, pedestrians and cyclists will be improved with new underpasses, allowing people to avoid the busiest roads.

Although extensive development is taking place in Niittykumpu, one of the main goals is to preserve the green and park-like character of the area.

Vuoritonttu will be built in an area formerly occupied by Outokumpu, a Finnish stainless steel producer. Some of the old buildings will be preserved and renovated for new uses. The former Outokumpu head office has been converted into a school.

The local primary school, Niittykummun koulu, started operating in the building in 2019. A day care centre was built in the area in 2023, and student housing is also being built. In addition, it is possible to build new offices in the area.

Homes will be built for a total of 1,100 residents, with a total floor area of 55,000 gross square metres. The area’s main developer is Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company.

The new Niittykumpu centre is being built between the Niitty shopping centre and Merituulentie. The existing parking area for residents will be developed, and the five 7–8-storey apartment buildings along Merituulentie will be completed in 2026.

A new residential block known as Niittysillankorva is being built near the junction of Haukilahdenkatu and Länsiväylä. The buildings will have 6–16 storeys and will be located approximately 300 metres from the Niittykumpu metro station. Some 400 homes will be built in the block. Construction work started in 2023.

The Riihitonttu residential blocks are being built in the area around the Olari Church, previously occupied by car dealerships. There will be approximately 30,000 gross square metres of residential floor area in the blocks.

The church and the historic surroundings of Gräsa Manor have been taken into account in the planning of the area. A new square will be built in front of the church, offering a place for residents to organise events and pop-up activities. There are also parking spaces in the area. The construction of the square started in early 2026.

Metsätonttu is a detailed plan amendment project on the western side of the Urheilupuisto metro station. The apartment buildings from the 1970s will be demolished and replaced with new ones. The plan amendment will enable the construction of homes for about 1,000 people.

Riihitontunkulma is a detailed plan amendment project on the northern side of the Niitty shopping centre. The car dealerships along Merituulentie will leave the area in the coming years, and they will be replaced by a new apartment building block. A new park will also be built in the area.
