Discussion on the area’s identity during the Rahamänty planning walk

On 8 September 2026, the City Planning Department organised a planning walk during the plan’s public review period. More than 20 people attended the event. During the walk, the participants were able to discuss the amendment proposal for the detailed plan with the planners and share their thoughts on the plans. A new day-care centre is being planned for the area between Kurttilantie and Hans Westerlundintie. The old, protected Kungsgårdsskolan school building will be repurposed. New commercial buildings are being planned along Kauklahdenväylä, and the feasibility of a new street connection is being assessed. The construction of Fransmaninkuja street is also examined.
Below is an interview with the main planner of the plan, Architect Anselmi Moisander, after the event.
What aspects of the Rahamänty plan were of most interest to residents?
The participants in the walk hoped that as much of the existing trees and local nature as possible would be preserved during construction. The future use of the Joukkojenkenttä field was a topic of much discussion. It is hoped to primarily serve housing, recreation and sports. Residents were sceptical about allocating the field for commercial development. Participants expressed particular concern regarding the adequacy of capacity for Swedish-language early childhood education services.
Residents also felt that the safety of traffic and mobility should be improved. They hoped that pedestrian and cycling connections to the Kauklahti station would be developed. In particular, the residents were concerned about the adequacy of public parking spaces in the area, especially after the new day-care centre is completed.
The future of the old Kungsgårdsskolan school building was of interest and concern to the residents. They hoped that the building would be renovated and repurposed quickly.
Residents expressed apprehension about the changing identity of the area. The hope is that the development of the area will take place on a small scale and in a manner that suits the local characteristics.
What was the atmosphere like at the event?
The atmosphere on the planning walk was conversational and interested. The participants felt that the development of the area was important and wanted to influence the plans. Many of the participants had already familiarised themselves with the plans and the plan material before the event.
Do you have any other messages for the city?
The residents also shared their thoughts on local traffic and the adequacy of services in the area. This information is valuable not only for the planning of Rahamänty but also for the development of the entire area. Important information regarding an open roof hatch on the school building was also passed on.
What happens next?
The aim is to submit the detailed plan amendment proposal to the City Planning Committee for review in autumn 2027. The progress of the planning work will be announced on the plan website and in the City of Espoo’s plan announcements.
