Meritie in Finnoo to be completed by the end of September
The 1.5-year construction project on Meritie is approaching completion. Vehicles have already returned from the temporary detour route to Meritie. In addition, a short section of the Espoo Baana cycling and pedestrian route has been completed under the bridge, creating a west-east connection from Lapiarinpolku to Ridarinreitti. It is no longer necessary to walk through the southern side of Syvänsalmenmetsä to reach the metro station. Work still continues on the site, but the project will be completed by the end of September.
Finishing work on Meritie’s new bus stops is currently underway. For a while longer, the stops will remain in their temporary locations near the old wastewater treatment plant. The construction of the modifications at the beginning of Syvänsalmenkatu has also started, as the temporary traffic arrangements have been removed. The canopy and staircase at Meritienaukio are also beginning to take shape. In October, a new connection to the metro station will open through the upper-level square, while a bicycle park-and-ride area is being built on the lower level.
The Djupsundsbäcken urban stream will flow through an open channel beneath Meritie. From there, the new channel will continue south of Ridarinreitti towards a new culvert at the southern edge of the Finnoviken wetland. The aim of these measures is to help prevent flooding along Djupsundsbäcken.
Quality and design for residents to enjoy
The design solutions selected for the Meritie infrastructure project emphasise Finnoo’s characteristic features, which are quality and design. The railings, canopies, paving and even the bridge pillars have been designed with the understanding that people will see them hundreds of times every day. The aim is to bring everyday enjoyment to local residents without compromising functionality.
“The quality of the work has also met our requirements, thanks to Louhintahiekka and the other contractors,” says Kimmo Leivo, Project Director for the area.
