KAMU Espoon City Musem’s School Museum Lagstad will reopen to the public in its renewed form on Saturday, 21 February 2026. The new museum has been designed together with the residents of Espoo through various workshops and events during 2025.

The School Museum Lagstad is located in the former teacher’s residence of Lagstad Folk School. The museum’s activities have been renewed, and visitors can explore learning in Espoo across different periods. Lagstad folkskola was Espoo’s first municipal elementary school and it began operating in 1873. The school functioned until the end of the spring term in 1954, when a new school building was completed nearby.

Plans for a school museum in Espoo began already in the 1960s, when school-related objects and other materials started to be collected for the museum’s collections. The School Museum Lagstad first opened to the public in 2003 on the upper floor of the old school building, where it was located until 2021. The old Lagstad school building still houses the local heritage centre of Esbo hembygdsförening, Lagstad hembygdsgård.

Lagstad is a museum of learning, and every museum visitor is the best expert on their own learning journey. Visitors can always enrich the exhibition with both old and new stories and experiences of learning.

The School Museum is open to the public on the first Saturday of every month. The School Museum organises various workshops and events for the public and for groups. Group visitors may also visit the museum independently and use the museum’s facilities for meetings and gatherings.
