Espoo-based associations, clubs and other communities are encouraged to come up with ideas and plans for new health nature trails in their own neighbourhoods. The principle is that the community proposing the trail is responsible for its maintenance, ensuring that the initiative does not create additional costs or new maintenance sites for the city.

The City of Espoo has prepared a Health Nature Trail Design Guide(external link, opens in a new window), which residents can use to independently plan new trails. Designing and maintaining these trails offers local residents and associations a meaningful way to get involved through hands-on activities in their own environment.

The aim of health nature trails is to provide users with opportunities for relaxation in nature and for observing their surroundings through various exercises and shared information. These low-impact, environmentally friendly trails can be used to promote the wellbeing and physical activity of city residents.

Popular Olari health nature trail sets a great example

One example of a health nature trail is the Olari health nature trail, which has become a popular outdoor and recreational destination. The approximately 1.5-kilometre route includes checkpoints with signs and exercises designed for both schoolchildren and adults. Duckboards have been built across damp areas, and benches placed on rocky terrain provide a perfect spot for a snack break. The route passes through a diverse forest area, which has required only minimal modifications for the trail. The Olari residents’ association, Olari-seura, is responsible for maintaining the trail.

Similar health nature trails could be established in other parts of Espoo, taking into account each area’s natural values and soil stability.

The city welcomes proposals from residents and communities for new health nature trails. Each proposal’s feasibility will be evaluated individually.  Applications for implementing a health nature trail can be sent to the City of Espoo’s Public Works Department at kirjaamo@espoo.fi. Before submitting an application, please review the Design Guide mentioned above.

The Espoo City Council has also expressed its wish that the city actively informs resident and neighbourhood associations and other communities about the Design Guide and the opportunity to submit trail proposals.
