Over 3,900 young people to start upper secondary studies in Espoo and Kauniainen in autumn 2025

In the autumn, 2,151 new students (2024: 2,123) will start their studies at Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools, 34 at Espoon Steinerkoulun lukio and 134 at Kauniaisten lukio. The Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools had places available for 66.3% of pupils completing their basic education in Espoo. The Finnish-speaking schools had 2,599 primary applicants (2024: 2,615). The number decreased by only 16 students from last year.

Espoo’s Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school, Mattlidens gymnasium, had 143 primary applicants and 200 available places in the general programme. Mattlidens gymnasium’s IB programme had 74 primary applicants and 50 available places. In Swedish-speaking general upper secondary education, places were available for 64% of pupils completing their basic education in Espoo’s Swedish-speaking schools. The Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school in Kauniainen, Gymnasiet Grankulla samskola, will have 97 new students in the autumn.

A total of 1,550 new students were admitted to Omnia through the joint application process. 1,260 of them are of compulsory education age.

In total, over 3,900  young people of compulsory education age will start their upper secondary studies in Espoo and Kauniainen in the autumn.

Average grades and scores for admission in Espoo

Among Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools, the number of applicants grew the most at Tapiolan lukio (primary applicants +43%), Espoonlahden lukio (primary applicants +37%) and Viherlaakson lukio (primary applicants +29%) compared to last year. Otaniemen lukio (564 primary applicants), Matinkylän lukio (309 primary applicants) and Espoonlahden lukio (281 primary applicants) had the highest number of applicants. On average, there were 1.21 applicants per study place in Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools.

This year, the lowest average grade required for admission to a general upper secondary school in Espoo was 7.75 (2024: 7.67). Otaniemen lukio required the highest average grade for admission (9.42). Tapiolan lukio’s general programme had the largest increase in the average grade required for admission, with the lowest average grade for admission being 9.08 (2024: 8.75). The lowest score required for admission increased the most for Tapiolan musiikkilukio and Matinkylän lukio’s visual arts programme.

The City of Espoo has ten Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools and one Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school, with a total of more than 6,500 students in the autumn. All general upper secondary schools in Espoo offer high-quality general education, and some also offer weighted-curriculum education or have specialised programmes (sports, visual arts, theatre and media). Two schools also have a national development task: Tapiolan musiikkilukio (music) and Otaniemen matematiikka- ja luonnontiedelukio (mathematics and natural sciences).

Omnia’s business programme had the highest intake of students

A total of 1,550 new students were admitted to Omnia through the joint application process. A total of 1,310 students were admitted to initial vocational qualification programmes. The programmes in business (284 students), social and health care (168 new students), and information and communications technology (136 students) had the highest intake of new students.

A total of 240 students were admitted to preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA). TUVA education is provided at Omnia’s campuses in Tapiola, Espoon keskus and Kirkkonummi. In the coming school year 2025–2026, a new cooperation model will be launched, allowing TUVA students to complete study units at Espoon yhteislyseo and Leppävaaran lukio. This option is available to students who want to improve their grades and are interested in general upper secondary studies (korotus- ja lukiopolku).

The application process for initial vocational qualification programmes in English was organised at the same time as the joint application process. A total of 85 students were admitted to the programmes.

Student admission results

The student admission results will be published on 12 June 2025. The Finnish National Agency for Education will send an email concerning the results to all applicants. You can also check your results on the My Studyinfo website.

What to do after getting your results

If you received a study place, you should accept it through the link you received via email by Thursday 26 June 2025. You may be later offered a place in a school that was higher on your preference list. If you want the place offered to you through the reserve list, please accept it as soon as possible, no later than within 14 days or you will lose the place. Places will be offered to applicants on reserve lists until 15 August 2025.

Under Information about the joint application system, you can find information on what to do after you received a study place, if you are on a reserve list or if you were not admitted to any school. Everyone of compulsory education age is guaranteed a place in upper secondary education.

The school year 2024–2025 in Espoo’s general upper secondary schools starts on Thursday 7 August 2025. Omnia’s new vocational students start their daytime studies on Wednesday 6 August 2025. For TUVA students, the school year starts on Thursday 7 August 2025.
