Spring 2025 joint application period for upper secondary education has ended
During the spring 2025 joint application period, a large number of young people applied to Espoo’s general upper secondary and vocational schools and preparatory education for an upper secondary qualification (TUVA). It is the responsibility of the municipality of residence to ensure that all young people completing their basic education have a study place.
This spring, the City of Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools had a total of 2,599 primary applicants. Last year, there were 2,615 applicants. The number of primary applicants in relation to available places was 1.21 (compared to 1.23 in 2024).
The Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools had places available to 66.3% of pupils completing their basic education. Compared to last year, there were 28 additional places available. For the school year 2025–2026, the number of available places in Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools is 2,151.
Compared to last year, the number of applicants grew the most at Tapiolan lukio (primary applicants +43%), Espoonlahden lukio (primary applicants +37%) and Viherlaakson lukio (primary applicants +29%). In addition to general upper secondary education, applicants were interested in specialised schools, programmes and weighted curriculums.
In addition to the ten Finnish-speaking schools, the City of Espoo has a Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school, Mattlidens gymnasium, with 200 available places in the general programme. Mattlidens gymnasium had places available to 63% of pupils who completed Swedish-speaking basic education in Espoo.
Espoo has two schools where students can complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB). Etelä-Tapiolan lukio’s IB programme had 50 available places and 77 primary applicants. The IB programme at Mattlidens gymnasium also attracted many applicants. There were 50 available places and 74 primary applicants.
The number of students in Espoo’s general upper secondary schools has grown for several years. The number of applicants to different schools varies from year to year. In 2024, the lowest average grade for admission was 7.67. To be admitted to Espoo’s general upper secondary schools, applicants must have an average grade of at least 7.00 in theoretical subjects. The final average grades for admission vary from year to year depending on the number of applicants and will be revealed as the results are published on 12 June 2025.
A total of 4,300 applicants applied to Omnia
This spring, Omnia’s initial vocational qualification programmes and preparatory TUVA education had 1,538 primary applicants. The total number of applicants was 4,300. The total number of applications to Omnia’s various programmes was 8,464. Compared to last year, about a thousand more applications were submitted, and the number of applicants increased by 451.
Omnia’s programmes that received the most applications were business, electrical engineering and automation, and social and health care. In relation to available places, the most popular programmes among applicants were the vocational qualification in media and visual expression (competence area of visual expression), vocational qualification in laboratory technology, and vocational qualification in food production.
There is no separate application process for combined general and vocational upper secondary education at Omnia. All students admitted to Omnia through the joint application system can combine vocational and general upper secondary studies.
A total of 160 applicants expressed an interest in completing an initial vocational qualification as an athlete at the Omnia Sports Educational Institution.
A total of 1,569 persons applied to preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA). There were 87 primary applicants. In the coming academic year 2025–2026, a new cooperation model will be launched, allowing Omnia’s TUVA students to complete study units at Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools.
People can apply to vocational education all year round, and around half of vocational students are admitted to Omnia through continuous admission.
2,346 applications to vocational qualification programmes in English
The application process for vocational qualification programmes in English was organised at the same time as the joint application process. The number of applications was 2,346. The English-language vocational qualification programme in restaurant and catering services had the highest number of applicants, totalling 1,105, and it also received the highest number of applications in relation to available places.
The results of the joint application process will be published on 12 June 2025.
According to the national schedule, the results of the joint application process and other spring application processes will be published at the earliest on 12 June 2025.
