In the autumn, 2,123 new students (2023: 2,118) will start their studies at Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools, 34 at Espoon Steinerkoulun lukio and 134 at Kauniaisten lukio. The Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools had places available for 66.3% of pupils completing their basic education. Espoo’s Finnish-speaking schools had 2,615 primary applicants (2023: 2,353). The figure increased by 262 students from last year.

Espoo’s Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school, Mattlidens gymnasium, had 239 primary applicants. In Swedish-speaking general upper secondary education, places were available for 63% of pupils completing their basic education in Swedish-speaking schools. The Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school in Kauniainen, Gymnasiet Grankulla samskola, will have 97 new students in the autumn.

A total of 1,473 new students were admitted to Omnia through the joint application process. Omnia’s vocational education and preparatory TUVA education had 1,308 primary applicants. There is no separate application process for combined general and vocational upper secondary education at Omnia. All students admitted to Omnia through the joint application system can combine vocational and general upper secondary studies. A total of 134 applicants were interested in an athlete’s dual career studies at Omnia.

In total, nearly 4,100 young people of compulsory education age will start their studies in Espoo and Kauniainen in the autumn.

Among Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools, Leppävaaran lukio had the biggest increase in the number of applicants (60%) compared to last year. Espoonlahden lukio (39%) and Etelä-Tapiolan lukio (35%) also had a significant increase in their applicant numbers. Otaniemen lukio (584), Matinkylän lukio (339) and Haukilahden lukio (274) had the highest number of applicants. On average, there were 1.23 applicants per study place in Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools.

The lowest score required for admission increased the most for Viherlaakson lukio’s visual arts programme, Leppävaaran lukio’s sports programme and Espoon yhteislyseo.

The City of Espoo has ten Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools and one Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school, with a total of more than 6,500 students in the autumn. All general upper secondary schools in Espoo offer high-quality general education, and some also offer weighted-curriculum education or have specialised programmes (sports, visual arts, theatre and media). Two schools also have a national development task: Tapiolan musiikkilukio (music) and Otaniemen matematiikka- ja luonnontiedelukio (mathematics and natural sciences).

This year, admission to a general upper secondary school in Espoo required an average grade of 7.67 (last year, the lowest average grade for admission was 7.45). Otaniemen lukio required the highest average grade for admission (9.42).

A total of 1,202 new students were admitted to Omnia’s vocational upper secondary qualification programmes. The programmes in business (284 students), social and health care (142 new students), information and communications technology (135 students) and electrical engineering and automation (100 students) had the highest intake of new students. The most popular programmes were the vocational qualification in media and visual expression (competence area of visual expression) with 4.5 primary applicants per study place and the vocational qualification in laboratory technology with 1.75 primary applicants per study place.

A total of 271 students were admitted to preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA). TUVA education, which was launched in August 2022, is particularly intended for young people of compulsory education age who still want to consider their future options and strengthen the skills they have learned in basic education or improve their grades. From the autumn of 2024 onwards, TUVA education will be provided at Omnia’s campuses in Espoon keskus, Kirkkonummi and Tapiola.

Student admission results

The student admission results will be published on 13 June 2024. The Finnish National Agency for Education will send an email about the results to all applicants. You can also check your results on the My Studyinfo website.

What to do after you know your results

If you received a study place, please accept it through the link you received via email by Thursday 27 June 2024. You may be later offered a place in a school that was higher on your preference list. If you want the place offered to you through the reserve list, please accept it as soon as possible, no later than within 14 days or you will lose the place. Places will be offered to applicants on reserve lists until 16 August 2024.

On the Information about the joint application system page, you can find information on what to do after you received a study place, if you are on a reserve list or if you were not admitted to any school. Everyone of compulsory education age is guaranteed a place in upper secondary education.

The school year 2024–2025 in Espoo’s general upper secondary schools starts on Thursday 8 August 2024.
Omnia’s new vocational students start their daytime studies on Wednesday 7 August 2024.
For TUVA students, the school year starts on Thursday 8 August 2024.
