Let’s pick up a million bags of litter!

The City of Espoo is again participating in Yle’s national ‘Miljoona roskapussia’ campaign. The campaign starts on 15 April and ends on 5 June, which is World Environment Day.
Everyone is encouraged to pick up litter alone or together with other people. Various municipalities and other organisations and communities in different parts of Finland have joined the campaign. This important campaign is also a light-hearted contest between Finnish municipalities.
The official patron of the campaign is Mikko “Peltsi” Peltola, an Yle reporter known for his nature and outdoor shows.
How can I take part in the campaign?
Participation is easy:
- Create an Yle ID at yle.fi/aihe/yle-tunnus/yle-id(external link, opens in a new window).
- You only need a litter picker, gloves and an empty trash bag.
- Go outside – alone or with other people.
- Pick up litter in your area.
- Put the litter in a mixed waste bin.
- Log in to the Yle website.
- Enter the number of bags in the real-time counter at yle.fi/miljoonaroskapussia(external link, opens in a new window) under the municipality where you picked up the litter.
- Challenge your friends to participate!
Where do I get the equipment and where should I put the litter?
You can use a trash bag of any size. If you need equipment, such as litter pickers or larger trash bags, you need to sign up as an organiser of a clean-up event. This will help us ensure that we have enough equipment for everyone. The sign-up form is available here(external link, opens in a new window).
Put the litter in your building’s mixed waste bin. If you only use a small plastic bag, you can put it in one of the city’s litter bins.
If you pick up litter as part of a clean-up event, you can leave the bags on the ground. You will need to contact our customer service and tell them the location of the bags. Our maintenance staff will then pick them up.
