Joint application period for upper secondary education has ended

During the spring 2024 joint application period, a large number of young people applied to Espoo’s general upper secondary schools, vocational programmes, and preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA). It is the responsibility of the municipality of residence to ensure that all young people completing their basic education have a study place.

This spring, the City of Espoo’s Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools had a total of 2,615 primary applicants. Last year, there were 2,353 applicants. The number of primary applicants in relation to available places was 1.23 (compared to 1.11 in 2023).

Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools had places available for 66.3% of pupils completing their Finnish-speaking basic education. Compared to last year, there were 39 additional places available. For the school year 2024–2025, the number of available places in Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools is 2,123 in Espoo and 134 in Kauniainen.

Compared to last year, the number of applicants grew the most in Leppävaaran lukio (primary applicants +60%) and Espoonlahden lukio (primary applicants +38.5%). In addition to general upper secondary education, applicants were interested in specialised schools, programmes and weighted curriculums.

In addition to ten Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools, the City of Espoo has a Swedish-speaking general upper secondary school, Mattlidens gymnasium, with 225 available places. The IB programme at Mattlidens gymnasium also attracted many applicants. Mattlidens gymnasium had places available for 63% of pupils who completed Swedish-speaking basic education in Espoo.

The number of students in Espoo’s general upper secondary schools has grown for several years, and the number of applicants to different schools varies from year to year. In 2023, the lowest average grade for admission was 7.45. To be admitted to Espoo’s general upper secondary schools, applicants must have an average grade of at least 7.00 in theoretical subjects. The final average grades for admission vary from year to year depending on the number of applicants and will be revealed as the results are published on 13 June 2024.

A total of 3,841 applicants applied to Omnia through the joint application system

Omnia applicants were most interested in studying business, information and communications technology, and electrical engineering and automation. Many young people also applied to preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA).

This spring, Omnia’s initial vocational qualification programmes and preparatory TUVA education had 1,308 primary applicants. The total number of applicants was 3,841. The total number of applications to Omnia’s various programmes was 7,507.

Omnia’s programmes that received the most applications were business, information and communications technology, and electrical engineering and automation. In relation to available places, the most popular qualification programmes were the vocational qualification in media and visual expression (visual expression and audiovisual communication) and the vocational qualification in laboratory technology.

There is no separate application process for combined general and vocational upper secondary education at Omnia. All the students admitted to Omnia through the joint application system can combine vocational and general upper secondary studies.

A total of 1,260 pupils applied to preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA). There were 81 primary applicants.

People can apply to vocational education all year round, and around half of vocational students are admitted to Omnia through continuous admission.

1,945 applications to vocational qualifications in English

The application process for vocational qualifications in English was organised at the same time as the joint application process. The number of applications was 1,945. The English-language vocational qualification in restaurant and catering services had the highest number of applicants, totalling 567. The English-language vocational qualification in information and communications technology received the highest number of applications in relation to available places.

The results of the joint application process will be published on 13 June 2024.

According to the national schedule, the results of the joint application process and other spring application processes will be published at the earliest on 13 June 2024.
