Bulletin on the Growth and Learning Committee’s meeting on 10 May 2023
The number of families moving to Espoo for work and the number of pupils needing education in English have grown and continue to grow. Therefore, the availability of education in English has to be increased. The committee decided that, as of 1 August 2023, English-language education will be organised at two administratively separate schools, i.e. Espoo International School and Kivimiehen koulu.
The Growth and Learning Committee decided that, as of 1 August 2023, English-language education will be organised at two administratively separate schools, i.e. Espoo International School (EIS) and Kivimiehen koulu. As a result of this decision, the EIS unit on the Kivimies campus and Kivimiehen koulu will merge administratively into one school and, in the future, Kivimiehen koulu will have both Finnish-speaking and English-speaking classes.
The committee asked the Finnish Basic Education Unit to prepare the changes necessary for the continuation of the school path with regard to the language programme of Kivimiehen koulu, the English name for Kivimiehen koulu, and a plan for the continuity of cooperation related to English-language education between EIS and Kivimiehen koulu. The committee also considered it important that collaboration and co-creation concerning English-language education are ensured so that both schools that offer English-language education are developed equally in cooperation with the schools in question.
New pupils applying for English-language education will be admitted to either Kivimiehen koulu or Espoo International School in accordance with the applicable pupil selection criteria.
The presenting officer removed pupil selection criteria for English-language education from the agenda.
