A total of 2,213 new students will begin their studies in the Finnish-language general upper secondary schools of Espoo and Kauniainen, while Omnia’s vocational programmes and TUVA will receive 1,427 new students

General upper secondary schools remain popular in Espoo; all places were filled. The entry scores were higher e.g. for Leppävaara’s and Haukilahti’s sports programmes, Otaniemi’s mathematics and science programme, and Kaitaa’s arts programme. However, a place in a general upper secondary school was easier to secure when compared to previous years. In the 2022 joint application procedure, 1,230 students were selected to study for a vocational upper secondary qualification at Omnia, and 197 students for preparatory education for an upper secondary qualification (TUVA).

The application results have been published on the website. Everyone of compulsory school age is guaranteed a place in further studies 

 

Easier admission to general upper secondary schools – 2,213 new students accepted 

The Finnish-language general upper secondary schools in Espoo and Kauniainen selected 2,213 students in the joint application procedure in spring 2022. The intake into the Finnish-speaking upper secondary schools of the City of Espoo was 2,079 and 134 in Kauniainen. All places were filled. 

Places in the Finnish-language general upper secondary schools in Espoo and Kauniainen were reserved for 66% of the pupils completing their comprehensive education. The number of new places in the general upper secondary schools in Espoo increased by over a hundred from last year (102), while the number of new places in the Finnish-language general upper secondary schools in Kauniainen remained the same. General upper secondary education is popular in Espoo, as roughly 75% of pupils completing comprehensive school apply for it as their first choice, while the nationwide figure is around 56%. 

Places in the Swedish-language general upper secondary schools were also increased for the school year 2022–2023. The current intake is 200. The intake for the IB programme is 50. Last year, the Swedish-language general upper secondary schools offered 175 places and the IB programme 50. In Espoo, places in Swedish-language general upper secondary education were reserved for approximately 65% of the pupils completing their Swedish-language comprehensive education. 

A place in a general upper secondary school was somewhat easier to secure when compared to previous years. This year, the average grade required was 7.58 (7.67 in 2021). Espoo’s Swedish-language general upper secondary school, Mattlidens Gymnasium, accepted students with an average grade of 7.83 (7.69 in 2021). The required grade for the IB programme was 8.58. The lowest accepted average grade for Gymnasiet Grankulla samskola was 8.23. In the 2022 joint admission procedure, the highest average grade for admission into the Finnish-language general upper secondary schools in Espoo was 9.08 for Kuninkaantie General Upper Secondary School. 

Omnia to welcome 1,427 new students 

A total of 1,230 students were selected for Omnia's basic vocational degrees in the 2022 joint application procedure. The highest number of new students were admitted to the vocational qualification in business programme (237), vocational qualification in social and health care (192), and vocational qualification in ICT (126). 

Furthermore, 197 new students were selected for the preparatory education for TUVA. The TUVA education beginning in August 2022 combines the previously available voluntary additional basic education, preparatory education for general upper secondary (LUVA) and pre-vocational preparatory education for immigrants (VALMA). 

Applicants were also able to apply for basic vocational degrees in English at the same time as the joint application procedure. A total of 114 students were accepted to study for these qualifications. 

Those on the waiting list will be informed of their placement as soon as places become available. 

A total of 53 athletes expressed their interest in studying for an athlete’s double degree at Omnia. At Omnia, athletes can combine vocational studies and goal-oriented training at a sports school. Additionally, 336 applicants showed their interest towards Omnia’s vocational upper secondary school. All of those selected to Omnia have the opportunity to complete their matriculation examinations and a basic vocational qualification through Omnia's vocational and upper secondary school system. 

Omnia's basic vocational qualifications and the TUVA preparatory qualification for upper secondary qualification can still be applied for via the continuous application process. Applications for basic vocational qualifications and TUVA starting in August may be submitted until 10 July 2022. The student selections will be announced by 1 August 2022.

A total of 2,353 primary applicants applied to the Finnish-speaking general upper secondary schools in Espoo. Last year, the number of applicants was 2,260, so the increase was 4.1% when compared to the previous spring. The growth has remained at the same level each year. The number of primary applicants per place was 1.13 (1.14 in 2021). Espoon yhteislyseo saw the greatest increase in the number of primary applicants with 167 young people applying for its general programme as their first choice. However, the highest number of applicants applied to Otaniemi general upper secondary school (532). 

The young applicants were once again interested in the schools’ special programmes. The entry scores were higher e.g. for Leppävaara’s and Haukilahti’s sports programmes, Otaniemi’s mathematics and science programme, and Kaitaa’s arts programme. The number of primary applicants for Haukilahti’s sports programme increased by 39% and for Leppävaara’s sports programme by 27.5%. Sports programmes at upper secondary schools offer flexible opportunities of a high quality to combine upper secondary school studies and sports coaching to active young athletes who want to reach the top.
