Update on 14 April 2022: The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has postponed the municipal sector strike for two weeks in the capital region. The strike was supposed to start on 19 April, but it has been postponed until 3 May.

If the strike planned by JUKO, JHL and Jyty takes place in May, it will have major impacts on the City of Espoo’s services. The strike will especially affect childcare and education services but also welfare and health services as well as cultural and leisure services.

Information on the effects of the strike will be updated on the webpage espoo.fi/en/strike(extrernal link)

The City of Espoo’s services are also affected by the nurses’ strike, which began on 1 April 2022.

Service Points and switchboard

The Espoon keskus Service Point will remain open during the strike, but we will probably have to reduce its opening hours. Please check our website(extrernal link) for up-to-date opening hours. All the other Service Points (Leppävaara, Kalajärvi, Matinkylä and Tapiola) and Espoo Info in Espoonlahti will be closed.

We will try to keep the city’s switchboard open during the strike. We may not be able to answer and transfer calls at our usual speed. We ask you to call the services’ direct telephone numbers if possible. You can find the number for each service on our website at Espoo.fi. In life- or health-threatening situations, call the emergency number 112.

The telephone, email and chat services of our e-services and Service Points will be closed for the duration of the strike.

Early childhood education, basic education and general upper secondary education

Updated 27.4.2022.

If carried out, the municipal sector strike will have major impacts on the organisation of early childhood education, basic education and general upper secondary education. Espoo’s day care centres will be fully closed at least on the first day of the strike. Basic education will not be provided during the strike. General upper secondary education will be organised if possible or students will study independently.

If the strike is cancelled or an agreement is reached before the announced end date of the strike, day care centres and schools will continue their activities as usual.

During the strike, we will provide information on our website: espoo.fi/en/strike(extrernal link)

The strike may impact the catering and cleaning of schools and day care centres as a result of the catering and cleaning staff joining the strike.

Welfare and health services

The strike may have major impacts on welfare and health services if employees are forced to stay at home to take care of their children as day care centres and schools are closed. However, it is difficult to assess all the effects in advance. Information on possible closures will be provided at espoo.fi/lakko. Appointments that have already been booked at, for example, health centres and maternity and child health clinics will be held as usual unless separately cancelled.

Information on changes to activities:

  • With regard to Disability Services, the Kuninkaantie short-term care unit and the Kuninkaantie and Riilahti activity centres may have to reduce or suspend their day and work activities if there are not enough employees due to the strike. We will contact clients, their families and housing units directly about possible changes in activities.
  • The strike also applies, for example, to the workforce leasing company Seure, which means that there may not be substitutes available for the units.
  •  Day activities provided by the City of Espoo’s Elderly Services have been cancelled on 19 April 2022 (Tapiola, Espoonlahti/Soukka, Kauklahti, Taavi memory service centre, Viherlaakso memory service centre). The activities have been cancelled due to preparations for the strike starting on Tuesday. We will contact Tuesday’s day activity clients directly.

Leisure services

During the strike, the Espoo City Museum KAMU at WeeGee and the Glims Farmstead Museum are closed. The effects of the strike on the other activities of the Exhibition Centre WeeGee will be further specified later.

All the libraries in Espoo will be closed during the strike. This also applies to self-service hours. Your loans will not expire while libraries are closed.

Some sports facilities will be closed and some of the guided exercise classes will be cancelled.

Employment services

Services related to the subsistence of our clients will be secured during the strike. However, we may have to reschedule some client appointments that have already been booked. Personal coaches will contact their clients directly.

The service point at Piispanportti (Piispanportti 10 A, 1st floor) will only offer essential services, such as:

  • information requests related to unemployment security;
  • starting a client’s job search process;
  • signing a plan.

Our information point at the Iso Omena Service Centre will remain open during the strike. Our telephone service at 09 8169 4000 is open as usual. The national TE Services telephone service at 0295 025 500 advises on employment matters.

We recommend that you use e-services (Oma asiointi)(extrernal link) whenever possible.
