The new city bike season begins on 1 April 2022
The city bikes in Espoo and Helsinki are in use from early April to late October each year. The city bike network shared by the two cities includes almost 4,600 bikes and 460 bike stations. In Espoo, there are 110 stations, similarly to previous years.
The snowy winter has posed challenges for the station installation, and some stations cannot be installed by the start of April. However, the aim is to have all stations in place during April. You can see the operational stations on the Journey Planner or the city bike website that will always show the station’s real-time status.
Use the city bike service for the whole season, a week or a day, based on your needs
You can buy a season pass for the Helsinki and Espoo city bikes at www.hsl.fi/en/citybikes. The all-season pass (seven months) costs 35 euros. Once the season starts, you can also buy a pass for a shorter period, such as a day or a week. The daily and weekly passes cost 5 and 10 euros, respectively.
All products include an unlimited number of trips for the duration of the pass. One trip may last 30 minutes, at the maximum. If you use the bike non-stop for longer than 30 minutes, the extra charge is one euro per each 30-minute period. You can use the bike for 5 hours at a time, at the maximum. A late fee of 80 euros will be charged for the time exceeding five hours, in addition to the other extra charges.
Registration and use
You can register as a city bike user at www.hsl.fi/en/citybikes. You will need an HSL user account to be able to register. When registering, you need to enter your payment card details to the system and select a four-digit PIN. The system will provide you with a personal cyclist ID. You will need the cyclist ID and PIN to pick up a bike from a station.
Three tips for smooth city biking
- If the bike station is full, pick a bike that has been parked by the station – this way, we can keep the stations cleaner together.
- If you notice that the bike you chose is faulty, turn its seat backwards to signal a defect. Please also file a fault report so that the maintenance staff can repair the bike and return it to use. You can find the link to the fault report here: /www.hsl.fi/en/customer-service/feedback/form?topic=4(external link, opens in a new window)
- When returning the bike, please ensure that the bike screen shows a message confirming that the return was successful.
Happy cycling season 2022!
