Culture Committee decisions, 26 October 2021
The Committee meeting discussed the situation with Soukka Library, in particular.
Situation with Soukka Library
The Cultural Committee decided that Soukka Library will be closed as of 1 March 2022. However, the Committee decided to require that a facility be found in the Soukka area for a temporary service point library similar to Pikkulaiva Library. The facility does not need to be in the immediate vicinity of the metro station.
The distance from Soukka Library to the future Lippulaiva Library is 1.8 km. The Soukka Library facility is at the end of its technical lifecycle and in poor condition. Furthermore, the library facility lacks accessibility features and does not serve customers with reduced mobility on an equal basis.
The City Council’s 2005 decision on the kind of service concept the Espoo City Library is aiming for is still valid. Of the options discussed at the time, the so-called district library model, where the library network consists of five district libraries and supplementing local services, was chosen. There are 13 local libraries in Espoo. All major districts will have a district library when Lippulaiva Library is completed in spring 2022.
At its meeting on 21 September 2021, the Culture Committee stated that if the closure of the Soukka and Laajalahti Libraries proceeds, a preliminary assessment must be made of the local library services in Soukka and Laajalahti to determine the impact on the residents, personnel, services, the environment and the economy. The library has commissioned the preliminary assessment from the consulting company FCG. The work is estimated to be completed by the end of 2021.
The Committee decided on other matters in accordance with the agenda(extrernal link).
