Matinkylä – an urban transport hub

The Iso Omena shopping centre in Matinkylä ranks among the three largest shopping centres in Finland, with some 200 stores and service providers and a total leasable floor area of 100,000 square metres. In addition to interesting stores, the shopping centre offers a variety of recreational and entertainment services. There are a total of 3,000 parking spaces at the shopping centre.

There is an Espoo Info service point in the Iso Omena shopping centre. The service point offers advice on services and matters related to the City of Espoo and its partners.

Matinkylä features diverse landscapes from rocky seashores to the lush Central Park. The seaside areas attract everyone from joggers to sunbathers and swimmers. The island of Iso Vasikkasaari is a public recreational area accessible by a ferry from Nokkalanniemi. There are two marinas in the area, serving as starting points for boat trips to nearby islands and further on in the Gulf of Finland.

Matinkylä offers excellent opportunities for sports and exercise. The Matinkylä sports park features two ice rinks, an artificial outdoor ice rink, two football fields, an athletics field, a BMX track, a skate park, a parkour area and outdoor gym equipment. There are also many private gyms, sports clubs and recreational activities, such as windsurfing and horse-riding, available in the area.

A swimming pool was opened near the Iso Omena shopping centre in 2022.

There is a high-end hotel with 192 rooms as well as two apartment hotels on the western side of the shopping centre. The hotel’s ground-floor restaurant includes a courtyard terrace open in the summer. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace, which is open during the summer season. One end of the hotel building has an entrance to the metro station.

Land use development around the metro station continues, and many new jobs will be created in the area in the future. In accordance with the Matinkylä-Olari development vision, the centre will be a compact area with housing, services and jobs. The centre is surrounded by residential areas with more low-rise buildings, recreational areas and parks. In the future, this urban centre located between the sea and Espoo Central Park will offer even more private and public services and a wider range of leisure activities.

Development also continues to the west of the metro centre. For example, a general upper secondary school, Matinkylän lukio, was completed in 2024.

Opposite the metro centre, a site has been reserved for a new senior centre, with 140 apartments and a wide range of senior and home care services.

On both sides of Suomenlahdentie, in the immediate vicinity of the metro station, there is great potential for residential construction.

The plans for the Mattliden area include a new, larger Swedish-speaking school and day care centre, a privately funded cultural centre and housing.

Olarin koulu will be extended to meet the needs of the growing number of pupils in the area. At the same time, the boundaries and space reservations of the block and recreational areas will be reviewed, and the area’s traffic and parking arrangements and their safety will be improved.
