There are currently 20,000 people living in Matinkylä. The number of residents is expected to grow to 25,000 by 2060. The Greater Matinkylä area includes the districts of Matinkylä, Henttaa and Olari.

Matinkylä’s strengths include excellent commercial services and public transport connections, closeness to the sea, and diverse sports and exercise facilities.

In Matinkylä, the benefits of urban living and everyday services are all within easy reach. The Iso Omena shopping centre is a popular place for shopping and spending time. The City of Espoo’s Service Centre brings together a library, a health centre and a number of other public services.

The extensive and versatile outdoor recreation areas along the Waterfront Walkway and in Espoo’s Central Park await right outside Matinkylä.

Future plans for Matinkylä

Thanks to new planning projects, more housing can be built along Suomenlahdentie in western Matinkylä and near Mattliden. The Mattliden school campus is being developed to serve the needs of Swedish-language early childhood education, schools and culture.

Matinkylän lukio is Espoo’s newest general upper secondary school. It opened in a new building in a central location at the beginning of 2024. The school focuses on creativity, wellbeing and sustainable development in a modern learning environment.
