As years have passed, Matinkylä and Olari have merged and now form an unbroken urban area.
There are currently 20,000 people living in Matinkylä. The number of residents is expected to grow to 30,000 by 2050. The Greater Matinkylä area includes the districts of Matinkylä, Henttaa and Olari.
Matinkylä’s strengths include excellent commercial services, convenient transport connections, proximity to the sea, and diverse sports and exercise facilities.
In Matinkylä, the benefits of urban living and everyday services are all within easy reach. The Iso Omena shopping centre is a popular shopping and leisure destination. The City of Espoo’s Service Centre brings together a library, a health centre and a number of other public services.
The extensive and versatile outdoor recreation and hiking areas along the Waterfront Walkway and in Espoo’s Central Park await right outside Matinkylä.

Future plans for Matinkylä
With new planning projects, more housing will be built along Suomenlahdentie in western Matinkylä and near Mattliden. The Mattliden school campus is being developed to serve the needs of Swedish-language early childhood education, schools and culture.
Matinkylän lukio is Espoo’s newest general upper secondary school. It opened in a new building in a central location in Matinkylä at the beginning of 2024. The school focuses on creativity, wellbeing and sustainable development in a modern learning environment.
A new school called Meri-Matin koulu will be built in the Tynnyripuisto park. Its conceptual design is already underway.
