Get to know Espoonlahti

Espoonlahti is a rapidly growing district in southwestern Espoo.

Espoonlahden keskus, the centre of Espoonlahti, is one of the most important growth areas in Espoo. The long-term goal is to build a dense and lively urban centre with housing and a wide range of services. The metro station and the bus terminal are connected to the Lippulaiva shopping centre.

The Tähystäjän päiväkoti day care centre was completed in autumn 2024. The building houses both a Finnish-speaking and a Swedish-speaking day care centre.

Central Espoonlahti has a population of 14,800. The number of residents is expected to grow to 20,000 by 2050. The Greater Espoonlahti area is home to some 60,000 people. The greater area includes the districts of Espoonlahti, Finnoo, Kaitaa, Kivenlahti, Latokaski, Nöykkiö, Saunalahti, Soukka and Suvisaaristo.

The Lippulaiva shopping centre in Espoonlahti houses a wide range of services, including shops, cafés, restaurants, a library and private health services. The shopping centre also offers direct access to the Espoonlahti metro station and bus terminal.

The Lippulaiva shopping centre and its extensive services are easily accessible to residents in the entire Greater Espoonlahti area. In the coming years, several apartment buildings will be built in Espoonlahti.

Future plans for Espoonlahti

The development of central Espoonlahti continues. The goal is to develop it into a lively urban centre with excellent services that are easy to reach from all parts of the Greater Espoonlahti area.

The construction of several apartment buildings is scheduled to begin in Espoonlahti in the next few years, for example along Espoonlahdenkatu and next to the Maininkipuisto park. Apartments for about 2,000 people will be built in the block across from the Lippulaiva shopping centre.

In Soukka, which is part of the Greater Espoonlahti area, infill construction will first take place around the metro station along Yläkartanontie. The first phase of infill construction will create homes for about a thousand new residents.

The entrances to the Soukka metro station are located on Soukantori and Yläkartanontie.

The goal is to attract some 6,000 new inhabitants to Soukka by 2050. As the population is growing, the city is preparing to build 3–4 day care centres and a joint comprehensive school in the area.

Located in the Greater Espoonlahti area, Kivenlahti is the final stop of the western metro line. The metro is expected to bring thousands of new residents as well as new jobs and commercial and public services to the area. Omnia, the Joint Authority of Education in the Espoo Region, is planning to establish new premises in Kivenlahti. By 2050, the population of Kivenlahti is expected to increase from 8,000 to 25,000.

Kiviruukki, located on the northern side of Länsiväylä, will be an essential part of Kivenlahti in the future. Kiviruukki is within a short distance from the Kivenlahti metro station. Kiviruukki is being developed into a workplace and educational hub known as Cleantech Garden, which focuses on bio- and circular economy innovations. A large number of homes will also be built in the Kiviruukki area.

A new general upper secondary school, Länsi-Espoon lukio, with places for about 1,200 students will be established in Kiviruukki. The school will rent premises in a new building on the Cleantech Garden campus. The location is easy to reach by public transport, which will attract students from all over the city. The aim is for teaching to start in the new school in the autumn of 2027.
