Respond to the My Espoo on the Map survey in autumn 2024
Understanding the everyday life of city residents helps to plan a better functioning, more attractive and safer city. By responding, you also provide information for academic research concerning immediate environment and well-being of residents.
The goal of city planning is to create an attractive and safe living environment for all Espoo residents. Residents have valuable information about their home town and immediate surroundings. This information can be used in city planning.
The My Espoo on the Map survey allows you to mark places on the map that are important to you or that you think are in need of development. The survey also collects information on how residents travel to different places.
The Espoo City Planning Department and Aalto University conducted the survey for the first time in 2020. New themes in this year’s survey include local nature and safety of the environment. They were included because they are especially important for residents. The new survey will also provide information on how construction over the recent years and other environmental changes affect the everyday life of Espoo residents.
The results of the survey will be used in Espoo City Planning and Aalto University’s research. The information will also be used in the preparation of the city’s strategy – the Espoo Story.
Tell us about your immediate surroundings!
In the survey, you mark places on the map and answer the following questions.
- In which places do you spend the most time on weekdays?
- What are the places that are important to you?
- How do you travel from one place to another?
- What places should be developed – and how?
- What places feel safe or unsafe?
- Where is local nature needed – and what kind?
You can also give examples of residential areas or other urban environments that you would like to see more of in Espoo. Examples can be from Espoo or elsewhere in Finland or abroad.
Responding to the survey
The survey is carried out with a digital map tool. The survey will take approximately 20–30 minutes. Responding to the survey is anonymous. The respondent cannot be identified based on answers.
You can complete the survey on your computer, smartphone or tablet. It is easiest to use a computer. You have access to computers, for example, at the library or Service Point.

Implementation of the survey
The survey is carried out by the Espoo City Planning Department and Aalto University. Information is collected in three ways.
- All residents can respond to the survey. People who work, study or otherwise spend time in Espoo are also welcome to respond.
- Responses from children and young people will be collected through extensive cooperation with schools. Pupils in the sixth and ninth grade and general upper secondary school students will be able to participate as part of their school work.
- Aalto University will send an invitation to 15,000 randomly selected residents.
The material will be stored in the city’s information system. The information will be used in the city’s various planning tasks in the coming years. Survey results will be published on these pages and via Espoo’s social media channels.
