Infill development

Infill development refers to development in connection to or close by existing buildings. In this way, vacant plots in existing plans can be utilised or the plans can be amended. In the broadest sense, infill development is a decades-long process of urban densification and integration managed by the city.

Infill development can also be planned in regional development plans, which are taking stand on services, transport, green areas and other infrastructure development. In practice, these development projects are implemented over decades in small project or block schemes, depending on the demand.

Additional development or plot-specific infill development refers to the addition of a new building to an already built plot or the extension of an existing building on a plot, for example by raising the height of an existing building. Additional development can also increase the gross floor area of a building, for example by developing an attic into apartments. When referring to site-specific infill development, the term additional development is used. Demolition and rebuild refers to an old building being demolished and replaced by a completely new, often larger building.
