The project Laadukas lukiokoulutus - silta nuorten tulevaisuuteen
The project Laadukas lukiokoulutus - silta nuorten tulevaisuuteen (High-quality upper secondary school education - a bridge to young people's future) has started in the Espoo service area of secondary education. In the project, a quality manual for upper secondary school education in Espoo will be compiled. Furthermore, project teachers will experiment with new ways of working in their upper secondary schools. With the support of the project, new types of support activities for upper secondary school studies will be created in the Lukiopaja, the support workshop for upper secondary students. The project also includes strengthening the recently introduced activity of the cultural instructors. The project has been granted a special government grant through the programme for promoting the quality and accessibility of upper secondary education 2022-2024. The project period ends in June 2024.
The main goal of the project is to create a quality manual for upper secondary education in Espoo. The quality manual will comprise the prerequisites for high-quality learning, in particular students' participation and well-being and equality, as well as strengthening the ability to study and the opportunities for the upper secondary school staff to promote learning.
Another goal of the project is to test what kind of measures can be used to prevent the mental burden of upper secondary school students, the prolongation and interruption of high school studies, and the experience of incompetence.
The third goal of the project is to establish the cultural instructor model and other support measures, so that the learning, graduation and integration of upper secondary school students with an immigrant background can be supported as efficiently as possible.

Experiments carried out by teachers are essential
In the project, the project teachers working at the upper secondary schools carry out experiments related to quality and well-being, the aim of which is to improve the everyday life of the upper secondary schools. The experiments follow the curriculum and are specific to each upper secondary schools, and focus on areas of development identified by the teachers. The results of the experiments are shared across the upper secondary schools. There are several project teachers in every Finnish-speaking upper secondary school in Espoo. These teachers are valuable creators of the quality manual.
Piloting a support workshop
Lukiopaja, the upper secondary school workshop, is a new form of support for high school students. The target group is young people studying in Espoo's Finnish-language daytime upper secondary schools
who have significant challenges in for example coping, self-direction and managing everyday life. There are problems in the progress of their upper secondary school studies that cause concern, and the student needs more intensive support than is available at their own upper secondary school. The goal of the support workshop is to prevent the interruption of upper secondary school studies and to support the student's ability to function. The upper secondary school workshop operates upstairs from the Leppävaara youth centre.
You can contact the upper secondary school workshop Lukiopaja through your upper secondary school's special education teacher or study counsellor.
