Early or postponed school start

Compulsory education starts in the year that the child turns 7 years old. However, school can also be started one year earlier or later if the child is granted permission to do so. This page provides more information on the exception to school starting age.

The service guidance team advises families on applying for Finnish-language early childhood education, pre-primary education and clubs. The team also provides information on matters related to childcare allowances.
