Instructions for enrolling in the local school: Local school and secondary school

Support for learning and school attendance is primarily provided at the pupil’s own local school. The pupil’s need for support is assessed in cooperation with the guardians and the school.

Instruction for pupils requiring intensive support is provided in centralised special education classes. If a pupil starting first or seventh grade requires intensive support, their pre-primary education unit or current school is responsible for the support application process. When assigning a place in a special education class providing intensive support, the above-mentioned criteria for assigning a school place apply. The sibling criterion does not apply to the assignment of a place in a special education class.

In Espoo, special education classes providing intensive support mainly refer to special education classes that provide instruction for pupils with disabilities. 

In Espoo, support for learning and school attendance is primarily provided at the pupil’s local school, which is assigned based on the pupil’s address.

The term ‘local school’ refers to a school in the catchment area where the pupil lives. It is not always the geographically closest school or the school preferred by the guardian.
