New language, new home – the library helps with integration

2.2.2026 6.52

Espoo libraries have clearly marked "Opi suomea" shelves with materials to help you learn Finnish. The books are easily recognizable by their Finnish flag stickers. The staff is happy to help you choose and reserve suitable books, even if the book is not immediately available at your local library. Reservations are free of charge, but a €1 fee will be charged for reservations that are not picked up.

Language cafés – conversation in Finnish in a relaxed atmosphere

Finnish language cafés are organized in several different libraries. The events are free of charge and open to everyone – you can join without prior registration or a specific language level. Language cafés are not teaching sessions, but rather opportunities to practice Finnish through informal conversation. The groups are led by volunteers.

Other groups for language learning and integration

Libraries also has other groups that support language skills, such as:

• Let's read together groups

• News in plain Finnish groups

All groups and schedules can be found in the event search at helmet.fi or list of language cafés.

Multilingual services online

The multilingual library services in the Helmet area are compiled on the website Multilingual services(external link, opens in a new window). On this page, you will find, for example:

•    free language courses

•    instructions for using the multilingual library

•    e-books in different languages

The library staff will also be happy to help you use these services.

Introductory tours for integration training groups

Libraries organize introductory tours for adult groups participating in integration training. The tour introduces participants to the library's services, and each participant can obtain their own library card if they wish. Teachers can book a tour via the website "Group visits to library".

Come and support language skills

Groups and events that support language skills are organized by library staff, organizations, and volunteers. Would you like to get involved? The library is also currently planning new activities to develop language skills – come and contribute your ideas or lead a session!

One of the key objectives of Espoo City Library's strategy for 2024–2030 is to promote literacy in all its forms. This also includes supporting the integration of immigrants and promoting the learning of Finnish. The library offers a wide range of services and low-threshold activities for this purpose.
