Rastaalan koulu is a lower comprehensive school, located in Espoo City, about 15 km west of Helsinki, the coastal capital of Finland. The school has an enrollment of approximately 550 pupils (aged 6-13). The teaching staff consists of over 30 teachers more than ten school assistants. The classes work in three different buildings according to different age groups and special needs. These smaller units create a peaceful and happy atmosphere and lots of space for classroom and outdoor activities - the school yard has limits but no fences. Rastaala is well-known for its music classes, but also arts, crafts and sports are very popular and highly appreciated within pupils' interests. In addition to Finnish, all pupils study English as their first foreign language. It is also possible to choose additional languages, French, Spanish or Swedish. Teaching literature and developing the teaching methods of mathematics have been two of the major projects in recent years. By co-ordinating between teachers, parents and the surrounding suburban 'village' the school strives to provide a happy and supportive learning environment where each child can grow and develop to become a valuable member of the society.
