Swedish-language immersion education
Swedish-language immersion education is meant for Finnish-speaking pupils living in Espoo. It is possible to apply to the education from all Espoo areas. On this page, you can find instructions on how to applying for Swedish-language immersion education.
THE APPLICATION PERIOD HAS ENDED!
Enrolling in the 1st grade and applying for Swedish-language immersion education takes place through the electronic Wilma service between 9th and 19th January 2024 by filling in the form Application for 1st grade of Comprehensive School. If you are unable to use the Wilma service, you can fill in the paper form. The paper form must be submitted by 19 January 2024 at the latest to the following address: The Finnish Basic Education Unit, Administrative services, coordinator Sara Raitala, P.O. Box 31, FI-02070 City of Espoo.

Entrance examinations
- 1-2 February 2024. Applicants will receive a personal invitation.
If your child has fallen ill and is unable to participate in the entrance examination, contact the school before the examination starts and present a statement on the illness. The principal has the authority whether of not a new entrance examination is held.

Means of delivery for the decision
You can choose the means of delivery for the decision when filling in the form ’Application for 1st grade of comprehensive school’. There are two options:
- The decision will be published in Wilma on 26 April, 2024. The decision will not be delivered by post.
- The decision will be mailed on 26 April, 2024. The decision will not be published in Wilma.
It is possible to choose only one. The choice is binding!

Enrolling in the 7th grade and applying for Swedish-language immersion education takes place through the electronic Wilma service between 9th and 16th January 2024 by filling in the form Application for 7th grade of Comprehensive School. If you are unable to use the Wilma service, you can fill in the paper form. The paper form must be submitted to your child's current school in Espoo by 16 January 2024 at the latest.
If your child is attending a school in another municipality or a private school, submit the paper form by 16 January 2024 at the latest to the following address: The Finnish Basic Education Unit, Administrative services, Katri Pietarinen, P.O. Box 31, FI-02070 CITY OF ESPOO.

Entrance examinations
- No entrance examination. Applicants to grades 2–6 and 8–9 are required to have attended language immersion or Swedish school in Finland or abroad.

Admission to 1st grade
Admission is based on an entrance exam consisting of two sections:
- Exam analysing Finnish language proficiency (0–45 points)
- Exam measuring mastery of the basic concepts of Swedish language (0–15 points)
Applicants are admitted in the order of their total score in the entrance examination (0–60 points). If two or more applicants have the same score, their order is determined by the score of the exam analysing Finnish language proficiency. If the scores of the Finnish language exam are also the same, the order is determined by drawing lots.
Any applicants who meet the admission criteria but are not admitted due to a lack of available seats will be placed on school-specific waiting lists in the order of their respective admission exam scores, with Espoo-based applicants taking priority. If seats become available, pupils will be admitted in the order determined by the waiting list until the end of August, at which point the waiting list will expire.
Admission to 7th grade
Applicants are required to have attended Swedish-language immersion education in comprehensive school in Espoo or elsewhere. If there are more applicants than the group can accommodate, a draw is held among the applicants.
Any applicants who meet the admission criteria but are not admitted due to a lack of available study places will be placed on school-specific waiting lists in an order based on a draw, with Espoo-based applicants taking priority. If study places become available, pupils will be admitted in the order determined by the waiting list until the end of August, at which point the waiting list will expire.
Admission to other grades
If study places become available during the school year and they are not filled by applicants who have moved to Espoo in the middle of the school year, new pupils may be admitted upon application of a guardian. Applicants to grades 2–6 and 8–9 are required to have attended language immersion or Swedish school in Finland or abroad.
Is this form of education a course?
No. The teaching of a pupil admitted to weighted-curriculum education will take place exclusively at the school to which they are admitted.
