Street lighting

The City of Espoo takes care of lighting on streets and in public areas. The ELY Centre is responsible for lighting on ring roads and Länsiväylä.

Street lights controlled through timer

Street lights are controlled through an astronomical timer. The lights turn off in the morning 10 minutes before sunrise and turn on in the evening 20 minutes after sunset.

LED lights

The city’s street light network consists of approximately 54,000 street lights, half of which have been replaced with LED lights. Each year, we replace around 4,000 street lights with LED lights, aiming to have all street lights converted to LEDs by the end of 2030.

LED lights consume less energy compared to older high-pressure sodium lamps. In addition, they can be programmed with various dimming settings. All new lights installed by the City of Espoo are programmed to dim by 50% at midnight.

The standard colour temperature of all new street lights in the network is 3000 K. LED lights offer excellent colour rendering, allowing colours to be seen more clearly.

Street lights turned on during maintenance rounds

Defective street lights are repaired during maintenance rounds carried out three times a year. Once one maintenance round is completed, a new one begins. During maintenance rounds, all the street lights in the area to be maintained are turned on so that defective lights can be located. This is why lights may also be on during the day.

 Report a problem

For cost reasons, individual lights are not replaced outside the maintenance rounds. However, urgent defects that pose a danger are repaired as soon as possible. You can report defective street lights or vandalism related to street lights or electric cabinets through Espoo’s feedback service.

Outside office hours, you can report dangerous defects by calling the emergency number 112. Do not call this number to report non-urgent defects.

Vandalism related to street lights or electric cabinets

Report vandalism to our customer service or the Western Uusimaa Police Department.
