SOLMU – new mobility services for transport hubs in the capital region

In the SOLMU project, we are working together with companies to develop solutions that streamline mobility in the capital region and promote the accessibility of travel chains. The project supports the use of sustainable modes of transport and helps reduce traffic emissions. We are also strengthening the collaboration between smart mobility operators in the region and enhancing business opportunities for local companies.

The City of Espoo aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, and this goal cannot be reached without actions targeting traffic-related emissions. Sustainable transport means replacing car trips with more environmentally friendly modes of transport, such as public transport, cycling and walking.

To increase the share of these sustainable modes of transport, they must be made more attractive and accessible. One key factor is the functionality of transport hubs, ensuring smooth and easy transfers between different modes of transport.

SOLMU project promotes sustainable mobility

In the SOLMU project, we are working with companies to improve the functionality of these hubs. Well-functioning transport hubs enable seamless travel chains by efficiently connecting different modes of transport and services. This reduces the number of trips and improves accessibility. Improving the accessibility of these hubs, in particular, increases the use of services at the hubs and promotes more sustainable mobility.

We are also exploring the development of so-called ‘mobility hubs’ at transport hubs. Mobility hubs refer to locations that offer multiple mobility services such as rental bikes, electric scooters, parcel services or travel guidance. Together with companies, we aim to develop the services needed at these mobility hubs.

Project goals

Duration, partners and funding

  • Duration: 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026
  • Project partners: City of Helsinki (main implementer), City of Espoo, Forum Virium Helsinki
  • Funded by: European Union and Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council (ERDF)

Benefits for Espoo

Developing efficient transport and mobility hubs makes public transport and other sustainable modes of transport more convenient and appealing. This supports sustainable mobility and helps reduce traffic emissions. New mobility services offer residents more options and flexibility. Improved accessibility makes travel easier for all user groups and allows businesses to reach more customers.

The SOLMU project strengthens Espoo’s vitality by supporting the growth and innovation of local SMEs in mobility services, promoting sustainable urban mobility, and reducing traffic emissions. The project allows companies to develop and test services in a real urban environment, raises Espoo’s international profile, and strengthens its appeal as a residential and business location.

Interested in joining the project?

We are inviting small and medium-sized enterprises from the capital region to join us in co-creating mobility services. Larger companies are also welcome as development partners.

The project offers SMEs:

  • A chance to test services in a real urban environment
  • User feedback and expert support
  • Visibility and networking opportunities with cities, other companies, and public-sector actors
  • Support in further service development and business growth

During the project, we will organise open workshops and networking events focused on business development. Companies can also apply to take part in pilots carried out at transport hubs through open innovation calls. Pilots will be carried out during 2025 and 2026, with calls for applications opening later. We welcome companies offering solutions for micromobility, accessible mobility, streamlining travel chains, or other services related to transport hubs.
