Restoration project for the Järvenperä area of Lake Pitkäjärvi
ParksEspoon keskusThe City of Espoo has launched a restoration project for the Järvenperä area of Lake Pitkäjärvi. The aim is to improve the flow of water in the area, curb eutrophication and strengthen biodiversity. The restoration of Järvenperä aims to improve the living conditions of fish and water birds, reduce overgrown vegetation, and increase the recreational use of the area.
Phase
Design
In 2025, a preliminary investigation was carried out in the area. It included water depth measurements, ecological surveys and sediment investigations. The investigations helped determine the areas where restoration measures could be carried out. The preliminary investigation concluded that it is possible to plan dredging and vegetation removal in the innermost part of the lake.
In 2026, the project will move on to the general planning phase, during which the preliminary plan will be specified. During planning, the specific dredging and vegetation removal areas and the arrangements for the handling and dumping of the dredging waste will be defined. The aim is to make use of the dredging waste on site where possible and reduce the need for transport and the related environmental impact.
A permit application will be drawn up for the restoration measures in accordance with the Water Act. The permit process may take about a year.
