Residential apartment blocks to be built in Westend

Local detailed plansTapiola

The plan is to build two new apartment blocks at Mäenrinne 3-5. At the moment, the plot has five apartment blocks, and two new buildings will be added as an extension of the pattern formed by the buildings in question. Between the apartment blocks, there is a sheltered and green ground-bearing courtyard area with open rockface. At the western edge of the plot, at least the trees needed by flying squirrels to access their other core areas will be preserved. The plan’s participation and assessment scheme will be available for viewing in autumn 2025.

Background information

The aim is to build two new apartment blocks in the area that are suitable for the terrain shapes and characteristics of the area but at the same time increase the area’s plot efficiency. The buildings will supplement the plot with two apartment blocks in accordance with the original detailed plan. The detailed plan is used to increase the density of the existing urban structure by means of complementary construction. In line with the objectives of the City of Espoo, an effort will be made to carryout complementary development on partially empty plots and increase the number of apartments that are situated next to existing municipal technology, good transport connections and services.

The aim is also to maintain the flying squirrel’s access route situated at the western edge of the planning area. The City of Espoo’s policy is that each flying squirrel core area must have two connecting routes to other core areas. This will also improve the ecological networks in the area more extensively. From the viewpoint of traffic, the aim is to maintain the current pedestrian and cycling route that travels north to south along the area’s western edge. At the same time, the city will ensure that traffic in Mäenrinne remains safe.
