Proposal for a planning reservation for the development of the Westend station area

On 5 October, the Business and Competitiveness Subcommittee of the City Board of Espoo will consider granting a planning reservation for the development of the Westend station area. The reservation is proposed for Urbanizator Oy, JM Suomi Oy and JATS Property Development Oy.
The planning reservation concerns an area of approximately 4.1 hectares, which is fully owned by the City of Espoo.
The target companies have explored the opportunities to develop the area with the City of Espoo. In their work, they have studied the traffic in the area, its environment, as well as resident and stakeholder opinion.
Their study created a vision for the land use, according to which the area has significant potential for development. The aim is to develop the current traffic environment into an appealing urban environment that combines housing, services, workplaces and public transport. There is also an objective to strengthen the connection to Tapiola.
According to the vision, the Westend station area could become a vibrant and functionally diverse nexus between Tapiola and Westend in the long term. However, this is not a complete plan, but a long-term development outlook, prepared as a basis for further planning. It is a vision for the development of the area in the 2020s to the 2060s.
Over the decades, the area around Westend station, south of Länsiväylä, has developed on the terms of traffic. Bus traffic at the station has decreased since the West Metro opened, leaving the station underused. Future developments of the area will also take the needs of public transport into account.
The project will require an amendment to the local detailed plan.
