Roadwork Site of the Year competition aims to minimise disruption to residents
The Roadwork Site of the Year competition was held in Espoo for the second time. The aim of the competition is to minimise the disruption caused by roadworks to residents, highlight successful construction site practices and promote their adoption throughout the industry. In the 2026 competition, particular emphasis was placed on the safe mobility of children and young people around construction sites.
The competition encourages construction sites to develop solutions that make it easier and safer for people to move around construction sites.
“Through the competition, we want to encourage construction sites to take the perspective of local residents into account even more effectively. During the summer, the multidisciplinary jury saw several excellent solutions and gave the sites practical advice during site visits. It was particularly gratifying to see how the construction sites responded to the feedback and developed their practices during the competition," says Vesa Ahonen, Project Engineer at the City of Espoo.
The winner of the competition was announced at the award ceremony at the Maarakennuspäivät event at Finlandia Hall on 1 October 2026.
The competition jury visited construction sites during the summer. The jury consisted of construction industry professionals (Infra ry), clients (Finnish Property Owners Rakli, City of Espoo, HSY, Fortum), city operators (HSL, Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce) and other experts (Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired, Finnish Association of People with Physical Disabilities, Finnish Road Safety Council, Espoo Youth Council, Finnish Cyclists’ Federation). The jury activities were coordinated by Ramboll.
