At Toimintatonni, children and young people get to brainstorm and vote for events and activities for the libraries

The Espoo City Library's Toimintatonni is a real chance for children and young people to influence what their library does. The theme of Toimintatonni 2027 is events and activities for children and young people, and now they and their families are being asked for ideas for kind of activities they want for their library. 

Every year, Toimintatonni brings together children and young people at Entresse, Iso Omena, Lippulaiva, Sello and Tapiola libraries and lets them decide on what they’d do at the library with a thousand euros.

In September 2026, in Espoo's regional libraries, children and young people can tell what kind of events, hobby-related activities or other activities they would like to see in their library. Everyone can submit their own idea either with an online form or in person at the library. 

In October, the library staff will review the proposals and, with the children and young people, select the ideas that are possible within the Toimintatonni framework. Proposals that are feasible will be put to the vote. 

In November, children and young people get to vote for their favourites at the libraries. Each library will present their candidates on a voting wall, and the ideas with the most votes will be revealed in December. The libraries will implement the winning ideas during the spring and summer of 2027. 

Toimintatonni is part of the Espoo City Library’s participatory budgeting and democracy education. When children and young people are given a chance to influence their environment, they earn an experience in joint decision-making and learn practical ways to be heard. It also reinforces negotiation skills, critical thinking and decision-making skills, among other things.
