Ring Road I – Keilaniemi and Länsiväylä bridges project begins in Espoo
Construction of a direct connection from southern Keilaniemi to Länsiväylä will improve the Keilaniemi interchange in Espoo. The project will also renovate Tapiolansilta Bridge and repair certain bridges on Länsiväylä. The works will begin in October 2026 and are estimated to be completed in 2028. This project will improve the flow and safety of traffic while allowing new development in the Keilaniemi district. The project is a joint effort of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the City of Espoo, the Economic Development Centre of Uusimaa and Fintraffic.
This project includes the construction of new ramps at the southern exit of the Ring Road I tunnel, which will create a direct connection from Keilaniemi to Länsiväylä, in both the Helsinki and Hanko directions. The renovation will cover the current ramps to and from Ring Road I, as well as their bridges, on Länsiväylä in the Helsinki direction.
Tapiolansilta Bridge, which has reached the end of its useful life, will also be rebuilt, along with renovations on eight other bridges on Länsiväylä. As the bridge works and the improvements to the Keilaniemi interchange will take place concurrently, they have been made part of the same project.
The contract, with GRK Finland Ltd (GRK Suomi Oy), was signed on 30 September 2026. The estimated cost of the project is approximately EUR 30 million.
“Ring Road I and Länsiväylä are some of the busiest and most important main routes in the Helsinki capital region, which makes them vitally important to maintain and develop. By carrying out several concurrent projects, we are able to reduce the overall inconvenience of the construction projects and minimise the disruptions to road users in the area. It is also cost-effective to bundle these improvements in one project,” says Jarmo Nirhamo, Project Manager at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
“This project will allow us to continue improving Ring Road I in Keilaniemi and to implement these connections, which have been planned for previously. Keilaniemi is a rapidly developing district, a significant business hub and a growing future residential area. A direct connection from Keilaniemi to Länsiväylä will make the area easier to reach, create the conditions for future development, and responds to the growing needs of business and residential life,” according to Street Manager Salla Hänninen at the City of Espoo.
Construction works cause alterations to traffic arrangements
The construction works will cause temporary arrangements to traffic, which will be announced before being introduced. During the Tapiolansilta rebuild, there will be a vehicle detour for inbound traffic to Westend from the Helsinki and Tapiolantie directions. Länsiväylä will remain open in both directions, but the construction will impose temporary traffic arrangements.
