Limnell and Mykkänen: Harassment of election campaigners has no place in a democratic society
Harassment targeting political campaigning has received public attention in September, with campaigners facing harassment, threats and violence. We strongly condemn such actions.
Democracy is founded on the principle that everyone can participate in public debate, stand as a candidate in elections, take part in campaigning and express their views without fear of harassment, threats or violence. This right belongs to everyone, regardless of their political views, party affiliation or background.
As campaigning for next spring’s parliamentary elections intensifies across Espoo, we want to emphasise that Espoo has zero tolerance for election-related harassment, threats or violence. Political differences of opinion are at the core of democracy, but expressing them never justifies intimidation, harassment or acts threatening another person’s physical integrity.
“Participation and civic engagement must be safe for everyone in Espoo. It is important that people can volunteer, campaign and express their views without fear of harassment,” say Chair of the City Council Jarno Limnell and Mayor Kai Mykkänen.
The City of Espoo emphasises that the parliamentary elections must be conducted in a safe, peaceful and respectful manner. The city is committed to supporting a safe public space for participation. It works in close cooperation with the Western Uusimaa Police Department and appeals to all Espoo organisations and residents to do their part.
