Espoon keskus is being renewed – construction work affects traffic arrangements
The construction projects in Espoon keskus will affect the traffic arrangements in the area for several years. New commercial services, a new public transport terminal and railway work related to the Espoo Rail Line project will be built in the area.
Espoon keskus will undergo a major transformation in the coming years. The construction work of the Espoo Rail Line project has been visible in the area for several years already, and the construction work of the project is expected to continue until 2028. At the same time, the City of Espoo will build a new public transport terminal between the railway tracks and the Espoontori shopping centre. The terminal will have nine covered departure platforms, six arrival platforms and six bus pick-up points.
Commercial projects in the area are also progressing. HOK-Elanto bought the plot next to the Entresse shopping centre, from the City of Espoo, and started building the new Prisma in February 2026. The construction of the Prisma will be completed in 2028. On the other side of Siltakatu street, Kesko has started building a new K-Citymarket. In addition, Kesko will launch the renovation of Espoontori by the end of June 2026, after which the shopping centre will be closed for approximately 18 months. Kesko estimates that the project will be completed in 2028.
The reforms will increase and diversify the service offering in Espoon keskus. At the same time, the commercial appeal and vitality of the area will be enhanced. The projects will focus on developing the environment around the station area and increasing the density of construction in the vicinity of services and public transport.
Construction work affects mobility
Simultaneous construction work related to different projects will have a wide impact on the traffic arrangements in the area. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has a map on its website showing the ongoing work and up-to-date information on traffic arrangements. The construction sites of the Espoo Rail Line and other contracts are marked with different colours on the map. The map will be updated as the work progresses.
In addition to the traffic arrangement map, traffic is also directed by signs in the terrain.
The passage through Espoontori to the train station will be interrupted at the end of June when the shopping centre renovation work begins. During the Espoontori renovation work, pedestrians will be directed from Siltakatu to the train station via Kamreerintie. During the renovation of the Kaupunginkallio bridge, cyclists can access the north side of the tracks via Espoonportti. The renovation of the Kaupunginkallio bridge is expected to be completed by the end of October, after which the bridge will be open to pedestrians and cyclists again.
As a separate project, the City of Espoo is building stormwater sewers in the Kirkkojärventie and Pappilantie areas. Due to the construction work, the stops at Espoo station, platform 10 (code E6042) and platform 11 (code E6027) will be moved to the area between Espoonkatu and Virastopiha to the north of Kirkkojärventie, for the period between mid-June and August. In addition, the Espoo station bus stop, platform 12 (code E6019) located south of Kirkkojärventie will be temporarily moved from its current location approximately 50 metres east along Kirkkojärventie. Up-to-date bus routes and timetables can be found in the Journey Planner(external link, opens in a new window).
In addition to the construction work at Espoon keskus, the Tuomarila station will be closed and there will be no train traffic at the station between 22 June and 4 October. The station will be reopened after this period.
