Tapiola sports park developing into pleasant complex serving different user groups

The Tapiola sports park will undergo a major transformation in the coming years. A 6,000-seat stadium will be built in the sports park, making it possible to host international football matches and other large public events. In addition to the stadium, the northern and southern parts of the sports park will also be renovated. The aim is to develop the sports park into a pleasant, cohesive complex that serves different user groups.
Construction work began in the northern part of the sports park in October 2025. The project is extensive and includes the construction of streets and water services infrastructure, a parking lot, a park, a playground, and sports facilities. In addition, it includes the renovation of the existing Koivu-Mankkaan tie and the construction of new streets: Yhteispelintie, Yhteispelinkuja and the connected public parking area, as well as Syöttäjänkuja. Other planned works comprise part of the new Urheilupuistonaukio square, part of the Tuohipuisto park, and neighbourhood sports areas, a playground and small playing fields within the park and recreational area.
Three new football fields will also be built north of Yhteispelinkuja, of which the two westernmost will be heated to keep them snow-free. Between the two easternmost football fields, there will be a pleasant neighbourhood sports area featuring a straight running track, a long jump pit, outdoor exercise equipment, a playground focusing on physical activity, and a children’s basketball court. East of the football fields, there will be a multi-purpose field suitable for activities such as floorball, as well as two beach volleyball courts and three table tennis tables.
”Construction work at the sports park has progressed according to schedule. According to the original plan, construction of the stadium was supposed to begin in 2026. However, a decision was made to postpone the start of construction by one year. Although the construction of the stadium itself is being delayed, the development of the sports park will continue as planned,” says Petri Vainio, Project Director for the Tapiola area.
Construction of the southern part is estimated to begin in autumn 2027
The development of the southern part of the sports park naturally connects with the northern part, and together they will form a cohesive and functional whole. The planned street arrangements, public parking areas and squares will support smooth mobility and passage through the area.
The Urheilupuistonaukio and Lippuaukio squares will form the urban and functional centre of the area. The squares will feature a wide range of outdoor sports facilities, such as an artificial ice rink, a skate park and a basketball court, as well as pleasant areas for spending time. The multifunctional and flexible squares will also be suitable for hosting events of various sizes and allow for the placement of temporary event structures and sales kiosks. Palloilutie, located south of the squares, will be widened and parking spaces will be placed along it. In addition, two separate parking areas will be built in the southern part.
Draft plans for the southern part of the sports park have been published and are available for comment in the otakantaa.fi service(external link, opens in a new window). The deadline for comments is 19 May.
After the draft phase, the finalised street plan proposals will be made available for public review during autumn 2026.
