Together against bullying

The City of Espoo’s Growth and Learning Sector works closely with the police in everyday matters. This spring, we are carrying out an anti-bullying campaign in cooperation with police officers Daniel Kalejaiye and Jonna Finell from the police’s Koulu25 team. Influencer and entrepreneur Nelli Orell joins Jonna in a video about cyberbullying to share her own experiences. In another video, YouTuber Abdirahman Keinaan interviews Daniel about racism.

“I experienced a lot of online bullying when I started making social media videos at a young age. I didn’t know what to do. It’s wonderful to be part of this campaign and to give concrete advice on how to act in these situations so that no one is left to deal with their problem alone,” says Nelli Orell

“Bullying is never acceptable. It should be addressed as early as possible. If the bullying meets the criteria of a criminal offence, you should file a police report without hesitation. In unclear situations, you can always call the police helpline and ask for advice,” encourages Senior Constable Jonna Finell.

Director of Basic Education Juha Nurmi says that schools cooperate extensively with the police.

“In Espoo, cooperation with the police is closely integrated into everyday school life and works particularly well. Our pupils participate annually in a concert by the Helsinki Police Symphonic Band; police officers visit schools to get to know pupils and staff; and the police supports us in various everyday challenges. This cooperation helps build a sense of safety and strengthens the entire school community", says Nurmi.

Espoo is building a safe learning path together with young people, guardians and school staff. If you experience bullying or harassment, always tell a trusted adult, such as a teacher or a student welfare professional. You can find contact information for student welfare staff on the school’s website.

The video by Daniel Kalejaiyen and Abdirahman Keinaan will be published on Wednesday 29 April.
