Promoting reading skills is a shared effort!
Strong reading skills strengthen inclusion, support success in education and working life, and help prevent social exclusion. And reading is fun too! Promoting reading skills is one of the City of Espoo’s key programmes. The ‘Lukutaito kuntoon’ (reading skills boost) key programme is currently being prepared and will be launched in the spring.
Promoting multiliteracy is also one of the key objectives of Espoo’s Cultural Services. The ‘Espoo lukee’ (Espoo reads) network, established in 2025, is a multidisciplinary collaboration network open to all city units. Its long-term goal is to improve the reading skills of Espoo residents of all ages and to inspire and encourage people to read.
In Espoo, promoting reading skills is a priority. This is reflected in concrete services for residents. For example, new parents receive information about the importance of reading at maternity and child health clinics. It has been recognised that collaboration with families is especially important in making reading a natural part of children’s everyday lives from an early age. Reading skills are promoted systematically in early childhood education, schools and libraries. The library’s ‘Lentävät laatikot’ (flying boxes) service delivers themed book boxes regularly to nearly 200 day care centres in Espoo. Many other city operators are also involved in developing services for Espoo’s increasingly diverse population.
Let’s work together to make Espoo a leading city for reading!
