Planned inspection to be carried out at Matinkylä swimming pool – water quality is monitored regularly

Recently, it has been reported that some swimmers have experienced respiratory symptoms at the Matinkylä swimming pool. Espoo Region Environmental Health Services has received two notifications of eye irritation symptoms suspected to be related to the pool water.

The quality of pool water is monitored at all city-owned swimming pools in two ways: in addition to official samples, the swimming pool staff monitor the water quality themselves. At the Matinkylä swimming pool, official samples are taken almost every week, and the staff monitor the water quality on a daily basis. Based on the results, the quality of the water is good, and no such abnormalities have been detected that would explain the reported symptoms.

However, it is known that swimming pool conditions may cause irritation to some swimmers, even if the water quality complies with the requirements. Symptoms may be caused, for example, by chlorine, its compounds or ventilation. For this reason, swimming pool conditions are always examined as a whole.

Espoo Region Environmental Health Services carries out annual inspections at the swimming pools, and the next inspection of the Matinkylä swimming pool is scheduled for the week starting on 13 April 2026. The issues assessed during an inspection include the functioning of the water treatment process, the general level of hygiene, and the indoor air conditions. The city will later provide information on any further measures needed after the inspection.
