In memoriam: former Mayor Pekka Löyttyniemi (8 August 1932–26 March 2026)
Pekka Löyttyniemi served as Mayor of Espoo from 1985 to 1995. Before his appointment as Mayor of Espoo, Löyttyniemi was a Member of Parliament for the National Coalition Party from 1979 to 1985. Löyttyniemi held two degrees: Master of Science in technology and Master of Laws (Trained on the Bench).
When Löyttyniemi became Mayor, Espoo’s growth was already well underway. In 1985, the city’s population had exceeded 150,000, and ten years later, when Löyttyniemi left office, it had grown to over 190,000.
Even after his retirement, Löyttyniemi remained an active public commentator and influencer. In 2020, he published the book Ajatuksia Espoosta ja kaupunkien kehittämisestä, outlining his thoughts on urban development, and in 2022, a broader work, Elävä kaupunki – kaupunkien kehittämisnäkymiä, which addressed urban development more comprehensively. The latter was also Löyttyniemi's tribute to Espoo on its 50th anniversary as a city.
The City of Espoo will honour the memory of former Mayor Pekka Löyttyniemi by flying flags at half-mast on 30 March 2026. The City Board and City Council will hold a moment of silence in his memory.
