Espoo has published its new playground programme for 2026–2036. The Technical Services Committee approved the programme on 21 January 2026. The programme will guide the development of the city’s playgrounds over the next ten years and define how Espoo will renovate, build and demolish playgrounds to meet the needs of the urban structure and population growth.

At the beginning of the programme period, there are 170 public playgrounds and residents’ parks in Espoo. The aim is to increase the number to 180 during the period, in order to respond to the city’s rapid growth and especially the growing number of children.

Key measures during the programme period

  • 72 playgrounds will be renovated in areas with growing populations and high usage rates.
  • 20 new playgrounds will be built in areas with a shortage of services.
  • 9 playgrounds will be demolished when the network is sufficient and the playgrounds are in poor condition or their usage rate is low.

The measures are based on an extensive scoring analysis, which took account of various factors, such as safety, condition, accessibility and population projections.

Accessibility and sustainability are key themes

The programme highlights accessibility, biodiversity and long-lasting, durable materials. When designing playgrounds, the aim is to create functional facilities that are easy to access, provide more shade and make use of natural elements.

Residents involved in preparation

The programme is based on extensive interaction with residents. Thousands of resident comments and suggestions related to playgrounds were analysed during the process. We carried out user surveys among residents and early childhood education staff. The Disability Council’s views were also taken into account, and accessible solutions and services for all user groups will be promoted during the programme period.

The Technical Services Committee approved the programme as indicative guidelines.
