Winter does not prevent you from cycling – quite the opposite. The Cycling in Winter guide provides brief, clear and practical tips that make it easy to start cycling in winter. The guide is intended for anyone who wants to travel in a convenient, healthy and environmentally friendly manner even in frosty weather.

The guide was produced in the Cycle4Climate project, and it is available in Finnish and English.

Why cycle in winter (too)?

Cycling is an everyday mode of transport suitable for people of all ages and an excellent choice for your health, the environment and more. A separate winter bike is not necessary – a regular bike works perfectly well in winter, as long as you have a few basics in order.

The new guide is a compilation of the most important things that every winter cyclist should know and note:

  • Visibility above all: lights and reflectors are important
  • Studded tires increase your confidence and keep the bike steady on icy and snowy surfaces
  • Wear multiple layers
  • Maintenance extends the service life of you bike

The guide also provides a few practical tips on how employers can encourage and support commuter cycling in winter conditions, for example by offering secure parking, facilities for drying clothes, shower facilities and bike washing stations.
