The past year was very busy at the Public Works Department. Numerous projects were planned, completed and some are still ongoing. This review describes a few successful implementations during 2025.

Mynttilä within the scope of road maintenance and water services

As a result of the street construction project in Mynttilä plan area, residents’ connections improved significantly compared to before. New transport connections were built in Mynttilä for both car users and pedestrians and cyclists. The new streets replace previous private roads and now bring the area within the scope of road maintenance. The lighting was renewed and the old bridge in the area was replaced with a new one. Water services were also improved. Previously, there was no municipal water services in Mynttilä, but the recent project now enables connection to the water and wastewater services.

Construction considered flying squirrel corridors, protected buildings and fixed monuments. The construction project was implemented quickly and completed six months earlier than planned.

New streets to Gobbacka

In the first phase of the street construction project of the Gobbacka detailed plan area located in Perusmäki, new streets were built and the existing street network was renovated. At the same time, lighting was renewed and the water and wastewater services network in the area was supplemented with both new and renovated sections. The wastewater pumping station at the end of Daaliakuja was also renewed. Once the houses planned for the area are completed, the street area will be completed in terms of both roads and green areas.

The carriageways were asphalted and granite edge stones were installed on the fully built sections and green areas were built. The project was completed in just over a year, six months faster than planned.

Desired fitness stairs for Kauklahti

The city’s ninth fitness stairs were completed in Hansakallionkuja, Kauklahti. The Public Works Department implemented 60-meter-long illuminated stairs in cooperation with the Sports and Exercise Unit. On the day of completion, the local residents’ association organised a small-scale opening ceremony in which the Vice Chair of the Sports and Wellbeing Committee Elli Keisteri-Sipilä cut the ceremonial ribbon with scissors. The stairs have been actively used by residents since autumn.

New outdoor trail to Veininmäki

An approximately one-kilometre-long Veininmäki outdoor trail was built in Laaksolahti. The illuminated, gravel-surfaced trail runs from Kuusinevantie through the Veininmäki park area. The multi-branch route combines the streets of Veininkuja, Veininmäki, Ukinpolku, Latvatie and Runkotie. Benches, litter bins and a small outdoor fitness area will be placed along the winter-maintained trail.

Runoratsunpuisto park completed in Vermo

The Runoratsunpuisto park was completed in the middle of the new Vermontie residential area. The park’s pedestrian routes were completed, and lighting was provided for the new trail sections. In the middle of the residential blocks, grassland areas were built and trees, bushes and perennials were planted. Two resting areas were also built in the Runoratsunpuisto park, where you can watch waterbirds and the life of the watercourse.

A fresh look for the Viherlaakso residents’ park

The renovation of the Viherlaakso residents’ park was carried out while the park activities continued. In fact, there were often little children behind the construction site fence who eagerly watched the lorries and excavators at work – perhaps future machinery operators! In connection with the project, the playgrounds of the park were renovated, and the yard got new spectator seating and a Moomin House with a slide that children love.

Hepokorvenkallio’s demanding street and park area construction project

The street and park construction project for the data centre, substation and heat pump station currently under construction in Hepokorpi, north of Ring Road III, has been exceptionally demanding. Several operators have been working in the project area at the same time in a variety of tasks, such as overhead lines, underground cables, district heating and excavation works. The project was completed one month earlier than planned for the city.

The project built a completely new Hepokorvenkaari road and improved the existing Paciuksentie road. As a result of the project, Hepokorventie became a city street instead of a state road. A stormwater basin was built in connection with underground cable and landscaping work in the park area of Hästängeninlaita and in the eastern end of Ollaksenhaka. In addition, an outdoor trail to Oittaa was built from Hepokorvenkaari in the direction of Puotismäentie. During the winter season, there is a ski track along the edge of the trail, which enables skiing. Hästangen also has a parking area for outdoor visitors. There are also a few exercise equipment along the outdoor trail.
