Covered litter bins out of use in winter

During the winter season, some of the litter bins along recreational routes and skiing tracks are out of use and covered with plastic. The city empties litter bins less frequently in the winter, as some of the maintenance staff are tied up in snow removal. The litter bins must also be dug up from under the snow, which further slows down the emptying process.

The covered bins are mainly located along recreational routes and skiing tracks that are less frequently ploughed than street areas. Depending on the weather, the litter bins are covered until the end of March. You can find the closest bins outside of recreational routes in the Espoo map service(external link, opens in a new window).

During the winter season, we are unable to clean the areas around all bins. The purpose of covering the bins is to prevent litter from accumulating in areas that cannot be maintained in winter, and thereby help reduce littering and rodent problems.

Dog poop bags in public litter bins or dog poop bins

Picking up dog poop is the responsibility of the person walking the dog, whether in a park, a dog park or on the street. Dog walkers should always carry dog poop bags with them.

You can drop the bag in a public litter bin or a mixed waste bin marked with a sticker that says ‘koirankakkaroskis’ (dog poop bin). The sticker indicates that the owner of the bin has allowed dog walkers who are passing by to drop their dog poop bag in the bin.

You can add a ‘koirankakkaroskis’ sticker to your own waste bin. Housing companies can attach a sticker to one of their communal waste bins; you can bring this matter up at your housing company meeting.

You can pick up a sticker from the Public Works Department’s customer service desk in Otaniemi, Tekniikantie 15 (2nd floor), Mon–Fri 8:00–15:30. You can also ask our customer service staff to send a sticker to you by post. In this case, contact customer service through our feedback service(external link, opens in a new window).

We kindly ask you to only use the available litter bins!
