What happens in the library when children get to decide? This winter, children in grades 1-6 in primary school will decide how the library should encourage reading.

The Toimintatonni initiative at Espoo City Library gives children and young people the opportunity to decide what kind of events or purchases should be made. The initiative involves the Entresse, Iso Omena, Lippulaiva, Sello, and Tapiola libraries. Each library has a budget of €1,000.

The theme of Toimintatonni in 2026 is encouraging reading. This time children in grades 1-6 in primary school will decide how the money is used.

Primary school pupils can propose events and purchases that fit the theme and that they would like to see in their local library. Ideas can be submitted from 1 to 31 December, either at the library or through an online form(external link, opens in a new window).

In January library staff will review the ideas submitted in the first stage and select those that can realistically be carried out within the scope of Toimintatonni. In February children get to vote for the ideas that will be implemented in the libraries. The winning ideas will be implemented in spring 2026.

Toimintatonni is part of Espoo City Library’s participatory budgeting and democracy education activities. Read more about the initiative on the Toimintatonni page.
