Espoo’s general upper secondary schools organised a joint collection between 4 and 21 November 2025 to support our sister city, Kryvyi Rih. The donated items have been packed and are now ready to be shipped to Ukraine.

Espoo's general upper secondary schools also challenged city employees, as well as the City Council and City Board, to participate in the ‘Valoa ja lämpöä Ukrainaan’ (bringing light and warmth to Ukraine) collection. The Mayor of Espoo, Kai Mykkänen, served as patron of the collection.

“It’s wonderful that together we can send light, warmth, and hope to Ukraine. Once again, Espoo’s general upper secondary schools have shown how strong the connection is between young people and our sister city, Kryvyi Rih, and how solidarity is translated into action,” says Mykkänen, thanking everyone who participated in the collection.

The schools collected 67 large boxes of donated items for Ukrainian sister schools. In addition, city staff and decision-makers from the City Board and City Council contributed a total of 8 boxes, which will also be sent to Kryvyi Rih. A donation opportunity was organised for decision-makers in connection with the City Council meeting on 17 November 2025.

The donations collected by schools included blankets, hygiene products, flashlights, reflectors, and power banks. Five generators were also donated to Ukraine.

Although clothing was not collected this time, hand-knitted woolly socks, mittens, scarves and hats brought to the collection points will help keep their recipients warm in Ukraine. Students also made Christmas cards and wrapped small gifts to bring joy to young people in Ukraine.

The shipment will be delivered to Ukraine coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior, in cooperation with local authorities. This allows the donations to be tracked and ensures they reach their destination safely.
