The City of Espoo’s year-round cycling campaign is underway. The event takes place at Matinkylä metro station and Urheilupuisto metro station. The campaign aims to increase cycling also during the winter season and to lower the threshold for choosing the bicycle for everyday journeys throughout the year.

The campaign, carried out in September and October, includes maintenance workshops and the distribution of safety products. These activities are designed to improve safety and comfort during the cold and dark months, support health and wellbeing, and reduce transport emissions.

Cyclists’ feedback has highlighted especially slipperiness and lack of proper equipment. Many lack studded tyres or suitable clothing, which makes winter cycling more difficult. Seniors in particular mention fear of falling on icy surfaces, which reduces the attractiveness of cycling. On the other hand, many cyclists point out that riding in winter conditions works surprisingly well when properly equipped. Trying studded tyres can increase the sense of safety and make winter cycling both more confident and enjoyable. For many, cycling is a natural part of daily life, especially if they have grown up moving from place to place by bike. The benefits of physical activity also motivate people to continue cycling all year round.

So far, 150 reflectors have already been distributed at the events, and the maintenance workshops have been crowded with participants.
