City leadership learned about EU advocacy

The City of Espoo’s Executive Group visited Brussels and Eindhoven from 14 to 16 October.
The purpose of the trip was to deepen understanding of current EU matters relevant to Espoo, strengthen the city’s position as a European forerunner in sustainable growth, innovation and expertise, and enhance Espoo’s collaboration networks within EU institutions and leading European cities.
“It is important for us to understand how the EU and Espoo are connected and how to influence matters. During the trip, we discussed economic and societal changes and gained a deeper understanding of EU funding. By making use of EU funding opportunities, we can obtain more resources for developing services, education, jobs and climate solutions, all of which directly benefit Espoo residents,” says Mayor Kai Mykkänen.

The visit broadened the city leadership’s understanding of the EU financial framework for 2028–2034 and the opportunities it offers. The goal was to strengthen Espoo’s influence on EU policies related to competitiveness, climate and talent, and to showcase Espoo’s solutions for segregation prevention, talent policy and the green transition.
The members of the Executive Group met with members of the European Parliament, including MEP Siegfried Mureșan, the chief negotiator of the EU’s multiannual financial framework, as well as senior officials from the European Commission.
In Eindhoven, the group explored the Brainport ecosystem and its innovation, housing and inclusion solutions. This pioneering technology region is home to over 5,000 tech and IT companies.
Discussions in Eindhoven focused on research collaboration and potential joint projects, particularly in high technology, ecosystem development and talent policy.
During the visit, Espoo also hosted two events as part of the European Week of Regions and Cities. At these events, Espoo highlighted the importance of education and climate action as key solutions to challenges in the EU.
