Espoo’s street light network consists of approximately 54,000 street lights, more than half of which have already been replaced with energy-efficient LED lights. Our goal for this year is to replace 4,500 street lights with LEDs. All street lights will be replaced by the end of 2030.

We are responsible for lighting on streets and in public areas in Espoo, while the ELY Centre takes care of lighting on ring roads, Länsiväylä and Turunväylä.

LED lights save energy and offer excellent colour rendering

LED lights consume less energy compared to older high-pressure sodium lamps. In addition, they can be programmed with various dimming settings. All new lights installed by the City of Espoo are programmed to dim by 50% at midnight.

The standard colour temperature of all new street lights in the network is 3000K. LED lights offer excellent colour rendering, allowing colours to be seen more clearly.

Our customer service received 1,300 feedback messages about street lights in 2024

People often have questions about when street lights are turned on and off. At the moment, Espoo’s street lights are controlled using an astronomical timer. The lights turn off in the morning 10 minutes before sunrise and turn on in the evening 20 minutes after sunset. The city is in the process of procuring a new control system, which should be introduced next year. In the new system, the streetlights will adjust according to actual light conditions, so they will stay on longer on cloudy mornings and turn off earlier on bright evenings.

Another common question is related to street lights being on in the daytime. During maintenance rounds, all the street lights in the area to be maintained are turned on so that defective lights can be located. Defective street lights are repaired in each area during maintenance rounds carried out three times a year.

For cost reasons, individual lights are not replaced outside the maintenance rounds. However, urgent defects that pose a danger are repaired as soon as possible.

You can report defective street lights or vandalism related to street lights or electric cabinets through our feedback service(external link, opens in a new window). Alternatively, you can report vandalism to the Western Uusimaa Police Department. Outside office hours, report dangerous defects by calling the emergency number 112. Do not call the emergency number to report non-urgent defects.
